Is it permissible for Muslims to Celebrate Birthdays?
Some Muslims do not celebrate their birthdays. Some say that it’s not permissible. They argue that it’s Bid’ah (innovation) and not permissible for a Muslim to do so. Yet there are many Muslims who do celebrate their birthdays. It’s okay for a Muslim to celebrate his or her birthday, as long as the celebration does not contain round cakes and is surrounded by reminders of Islam.
Muslims celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday on October 8th, the same day as the Prophet’s birthday. Some Muslims mark this day with fasting, communal meals, and special prayers, while others have outdoor celebrations. In some parts of the world, the birthday is celebrated as the Miladunnabi or Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. The celebrations, however, do not occur on this date in the United States.
